Baycol

Baycol (Cerivastatin) is a cholesterol-lowering drug manufactured by Bayer Corporation. After being used by more than 700,000 Americans, Bayer withdrew Baycol form the market in August 2001 following reports of problems and use-related side effects. So far, Baycol has been linked to a muscle disorder called rhabdomyolysis, kidney failure and 52 deaths. Doctors prescribed Baycol for high blood pressure and heart disease and often used it jointly with gemfibrozil to improve so-called "good," cholesterol. The dual prescription was particularly common for patients with diabetes.
